What is an Inguinal Hernia?

1 min read
An inguinal hernia is a defect, or hole, in the muscle of the lower abdomen. The defect is near the pubic bone.
The abdominal muscles hold our “insides” in; a hole in the muscle allows things that should be inside the abdomen to push through the hole.
Sometimes, what pushes through the hole (e.g., intestine) can lose its blood supply. This is called strangulation.
If tissue (such as intestine) loses its blood supply, that tissue can die.

Strangulation of a hernia can be a life-threatening problem. Inguinal hernias should be evaluated by a physician.
