Although the term “general” seems a bit ill-defined, general surgery is actually a specific surgical speciality.
General surgeons are commonly thought of as the specialists in frequently performed surgical procedures such as gallbladder removals, appendectomies, hernia repairs, and many more.
General surgeons typically spend 5 years or more in dedicated surgical training after completion of medical school.
The general surgeon’s role typically involves the total care of the surgical patient and also assisting with coordination of care with other specialists as needed.
Some general surgeons specialize in certain specific types of surgery, such as cancer treatment or burn surgery.
