What is Diverticulitis?
Diverticulitis is an infection of pouches called diverticula that can form in the wall of the colon or intestine.
Symptoms of diverticulitis can include lower abdominal pain or cramping, diarrhea, fever and nausea.
Mild cases of diverticulitis can be treated with antibiotics.
Severe cases of diverticulitis can require hospitalization, antibiotics or even an operation to remove part of your colon.
Elective colon surgery is sometimes recommended when patients have multiple episodes of diverticulitis or diverticulitis flares.
A consultation with a surgeon is recommended for patients with diverticulitis.
