Is a Ventral Hernia Dangerous?
If a ventral hernia is not repaired, it will likely increase in size and can cause pain.
If the intestine is squeezed tight (that is, “strangulated”) in the defect, most often pain and vomiting will occur. Strangulation requires immediate surgery.
Because of the danger of strangulation with ventral hernias, most all ventral hernias are repaired.
