Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Roughly 1 out of 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.
~50,000 in-situ (noninvasive) and ~270,000 invasive breast cancers will be diagnosed in 2019. 2,500 of these will be in men.
Most breast cancers are found on routine mammogram and are early stage.
Your body, medical conditions, tumor size, tumor location, and tumor stage determine what treatment options are available.
Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS) or lumpectomy removes the tumor with some margin of healthy tissue around it.
BCS is followed with radiation therapy in the vast majority of cases.
Mastectomy is removal of the entire breast containing the tumor.
Depending on host and tumor factors, radiation may or may not be used in the post-mastectomy setting.
